Overview:

The authors report a case of delayed onset of Diffuse lamellar keratitis (non infectious corneal inflammation) 1 week after permanent eyeliner tattooing. The patient had previously undergone bilateral laser‑assisted in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) surgery 10 years prior which is sometimes a complication after LASIK surgery. The authors believe this case report is the first case of DLK with such a late‑onset triggered by permanent eyeliner tattoo treatment.

Discussion:

Clients with a past history of LASIK surgery may or may not have an increased risk of late onset DLK after eyeliner tattooing, industry monitoring of this client subgroup is advisable.

Recommendations:

Clients who have a past history of DLK should seek advice from their treating ophthalmologist prior to considering eyeliner tattooing, clients with a past history of LASIK surgery should seek ophthalmology review if inflammatory symptoms occur after eyeliner tattooing.
