Abstract:
Tattooing is a very popular form of body modification among young people. However, this kind of procedure entails the risk of various health complications. The objective of the study was to evaluate the students’ knowledge about contraindications, complications, and health risks that skin tattooing may cause. Additionally, the purpose of the study was to assess how the profile of education (medical vs nonmedical) impacts on the knowledge of the respondents.

The authors report a case of delayed onset of Diffuse lamellar keratitis (non infectious corneal inflammation) 1 week after permanent eyeliner tattooing. The patient had previously undergone bilateral laser‑assisted in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) surgery 10 years prior which is sometimes a complication after LASIK surgery. The authors believe this case report is the first case of DLK with such a late‑onset triggered by permanent eyeliner tattoo treatment.

The authors noted that based upon historical data Sarcoidosis appears to be more prevalent among patients with tattoo reactions and they evaluated the potential association in their systematic study. In their conclusion the authors noted that "black tattoos with papulo-nodular reactions should be seen as markers of sarcoidosis" and that depending on individual predisposition "Papulo-nodular reactions may, as triggers, induce widespread reactions in other black tattoos" describing this as a “rush phenomenon” .
